 What Are Parts of Speech?

English: Parts of Speech are the basic types of words that we use to form sentences.
বাংলা: Parts of Speech হল এমন কিছু শব্দের শ্রেণি যা বাক্য গঠনে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

There are 8 Parts of Speech in English.

1. Noun (বিশেষ্য)

Definition: A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
ব্যাখ্যা: Noun হলো ব্যক্তি, বস্তু, স্থান বা ধারণার নাম।

Examples:

• Rina is my sister. → Rina (person)
• Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. → Dhaka (place)
• Honesty is a virtue. → Honesty (idea)

Types of Nouns:

• Proper Noun – Dhaka, Rahim
• Common Noun – city, boy
• Abstract Noun – truth, love
• Material Noun – gold, milk
• Collective Noun – team, family

2. Pronoun (সর্বনাম)

Definition: A pronoun is used in place of a noun.
ব্যাখ্যা: Noun-এর পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত শব্দ।

Examples:

• She is a doctor. (She replaces a girl’s name)
• They went to the park.

Types:

• Personal – I, you, he, they
• Possessive – my, your, their
• Reflexive – myself, himself
• Relative – who, which
• Demonstrative – this, that
• Interrogative – who, what

3. Verb (ক্রিয়া)

Definition: A verb shows an action or state of being.
ব্যাখ্যা: Verb হলো কাজ বোঝানো শব্দ।

Examples:

• He runs fast.
• They are happy. (are is a state verb)

Types:

• Main Verb – eat, run, go
• Auxiliary Verb – is, am, do, have
• Modal Verb – can, must, should

4. Adjective (বিশেষণ)

Definition: An adjective describes a noun or pronoun.
ব্যাখ্যা: Noun বা Pronoun এর গুণ বা অবস্থা বোঝায়।

Examples:

• She is a brilliant student.
• The sky is blue.

Types:

• Descriptive – good, tall, red
• Quantitative – some, much
• Demonstrative – this, that
• Interrogative – which, what

5. Adverb (ক্রিয়া বিশেষণ)

Definition: An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
ব্যাখ্যা: Verb, Adjective বা অন্য Adverb সম্পর্কে বিস্তারিত জানায়।

Examples:

• He runs quickly. (modifies verb)
• She is very smart. (modifies adjective)
• He speaks too fast. (modifies adverb)

Types:

• Manner – quickly, slowly
• Time – now, yesterday
• Frequency – always, often
• Degree – very, quite

6. Preposition (অব্যয়)

Definition: A preposition shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and other words in a sentence.
ব্যাখ্যা: Preposition হলো Noun বা Pronoun-এর সঙ্গে বাক্যের অন্য শব্দের সম্পর্ক দেখানো শব্দ।

Examples:

• The book is on the table.
• She went to school.

Common Prepositions:
in, on, at, to, from, with, under, over

🔹 7. Conjunction (সংযোজক অব্যয়)

Definition: A conjunction joins words, phrases, or sentences.
ব্যাখ্যা: দুটি শব্দ, বাক্যাংশ বা বাক্যকে সংযুক্ত করে।

Examples:

• Rina and Mina are friends.
• I was tired, but I worked.

Types:

• Coordinating – and, but, or
• Subordinating – because, although, if
• Correlative – either…or, neither…nor

8. Interjection (আবেগসূচক শব্দ)

Definition: An interjection expresses sudden feelings or emotions.
ব্যাখ্যা: আকস্মিক অনুভূতি প্রকাশে ব্যবহৃত শব্দ।

Examples:

• Wow! What a beautiful dress!
• Oh! I forgot my phone.
