Completing Sentence Shortcut Rules (বাংলা অর্থসহ)

Rule 1 ► That/so that/in order that (যাতে)

Structure 1: Present Tense → that/so that/in order that → subject +can/will/may + V1 + obj/ext.

Structure 2: Past Tense→ that/so that/in order that → subject + could/would/might + V1 + obj/ext.

Example:

1. We eat so that we can survive. (আমরা খাই, যাতে করে আমরা বাাঁচতে পারি/লড়াই করতে পারি)

2. We ate so that we could survive. (আমরা খেয়েছি, যাতে করে আম বাাঁচকতে/লড়াই করতে পারতাম)

3. We eat so that we may live. (আমরা খাই, যাতে করে আমরা বাাঁচকে পারি)

4. The farmers sow seeds that they may get a harvest. (কৃষক বীজ বপন করে, যাতে করে তারা ফসল পেতে পারে)

5. I closed the door so that he might not enter the room. (আমি দরজাটি বন্ধ করেছি, যাতে করে সে কক্ষে প্রবেশ করতে না পারে)

6. She saved money in order that she could buy a gift. (সে টাকা জমিয়েছিল, যাতে করে সে একটি উপহার কিনতে পারত)

Rule 2 ► As if/as though (এমন… যেন)

Structure 1: Present Tense→ as if/as though → subject + V2 + object. Or Subject + were + object.

Structure 2: Past Tense→ as if/as though → subject + had + V3 + object. Or Subject + had been + object.

Example:

1. He talks as if he knew everything. (সে এমনভাবে বলছে যেন সে সবই জানত)

2. She spoke as if she had known everything. (সে এমনভাবে বলল যেন সবই জানে)

Rules 3 ► Lest/In case (যাতে.. না/ নতুবা)

Structure: Any Tense→ Lest→ subject + should/might + V1 + object.

Example:

1. 1. Walk fast lest you should miss the train. (দ্রুত হাঁট নতুবা তুমি ট্রেনটি মিস করবে)

2. I wrote down her address in case I should forget it. (আমি তার ঠিকানা লিখে রেখেছি নতুবা আমি এটি ভুলে যাব)

3. I’ve bought a chicken in case Raj should stay for lunch. (আমি একটি চিকেন/মুরগি কিনেছি যাতে রাজ লাঞ্চে থাকতে পারে)

4. They kept watching all night lest robbers should come. (রাতা সারারাত দেখেছিল নতুবা ডাকতে আসত)

5. We must take care lest evil thoughts enter our hearts. (আমাদের সতর্ক হতে হবে যাতে কু-চিন্তা আমাদের হৃদয়ে প্রবেশ করতে না পারে)

6. We must take immediate action lest it grew worse. (আমাদের অবিলম্বে ব্যবস্থা নিতে হবে যাতে এটি আরও খারাপ না হয়।)

7. He hide in the woods lest the soldiers would find him. (সে জঙ্গলে লুকিয়েছিল যাতে সৈন্যরা তাকে খুজে না পায়।)

8. Take your umbrella lest you should get wet. (আপনার ছাতা নিন যাতে আপনি ভিজে না যান।)

Rule 4 ► Though/although (যদিও)

 Example:

1. Though he is poor, he is honest. (যদিও সে দরিদ্র, সে সৎ)

2. Though he knows English, he cannot speak in it. (যদিও সে ইংরেজি জানে, সে এটিও কথা বলতে পারে না)

 Rule 5 ► Though/although (যদিও)

Structure: No sooner had + subject + V3 + object → than/before + subject + V2 + object.

Example:

1. No sooner had I reached the station than the train left. (আমি স্টেশনে পৌঁছাতেই ট্রেনটি চলে গেল)

2. No sooner had we entered the room than they started clapping. (আমি কক্ষে প্রবেশ করতে না করতেই তারা হাতে তালি দেয়া গুরু করল)

3. No sooner had the teacher entered the class than students kept quiet. (শিক্ষক শ্রেণিকক্ষে প্রবেশ করতে না করতেই শিক্ষার্থীরা চুপ হয়ে গেল)

4. No sooner had we seen Eva than she started waying. (আমরা ঈভাকে দেখতে না দেখতেই সে হাত দোলাতে গুরু করল)

5. No sooner had the watchman seen the police officer than he started saluting. (প্রহরী পুলিশ অফিসারকে দেখতে না দেখতেই স্যালুট দিতে শুরু করল)

 Rule 6 ► Hardly had

Structure: Hardly had + subject + V3 + object→ before/when + subject + V2 + object.
